Whenever I want a light, fast-moving mystery, I turn to H.Y. Hanna and her Oxford Tearoom Mystery series. Wrongfully Infused is the 11th installment, and it is pleasant, upbeat, and enjoyable. These culinary cozies are well-written, quick-to-read, and they don’t contain any sex, profanity, or violence, so they are suitable for all ages.

Hanna has done an excellent job of developing her characters, and although it is recommended that they be read in order (they are quite entertaining), readers will enjoy every one as a standalone novel if necessary. Gemma is a believable, albeit a bit pushy, protagonist, and the supporting characters like her clueless mother, friends, the Old Biddies (and Muesli the favorite with all of us cat lovers) are delightful and fun. Devlin, the detective boyfriend seems a bit cold and standoffish. The setting is charming, in that it is in a village in the Cotswolds near Oxford, so that’s fun too.

One thing that also helps is that there is a glossary in this novel that explains the idioms of British/Australian English. As an English major myself, I get bugged because she uses “forwards” rather than “forward” which is incorrect in American grammar, but apparently ok in the British version – they did invent the language after all, so this is definitely not a real criticism of Hanna’s writing.

My only problem with this series is that I have to wait in between novels before the new one comes out. During busy times, they are a perfect bright spot to take a break and read. The recipes are a bonus, and worth trying. Five stars once again for H.Y. Hanna.
